- help make decisions on motor, household, credit, life and other insurance proposals and claims for you and members of your household;
- trace people who owe money, recover debt, prevent fraud and to manage your insurance policies;.

Motor Insurance Database

If you take out a motor insurance policy your policy details will be added to the Motor Insurance Database (“MID”), run by the Motor Insurers’ Information Centre (“MIIC”). MID data may be used by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency and the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Northern Ireland for the purpose of electronic vehicle licensing and by the police for the purposes of establishing whether a driver’s use of a vehicle is likely to be covered by a motor insurance policy and for preventing and detecting crime. If you are involved in an accident, whether in the UK or abroad, other UK insurers, the Motor Insurers’ Bureau and MIIC may search the MID to obtain relevant policy information.
Persons pursuing a claim in respect of a road traffic accident (including citizens of other EU countries) may be entitled to access relevant information held about you on the MID. You can find out more about this at www.miic.org.uk .

Credit reference agencies

In processing any application you may make for credit, we may contact credit reference agencies who will record any such enquiry. They may supply us with credit information, including information from the electoral register. If we provide you with credit, we will provide details of your account and how you manage it to credit reference agencies. If you fail to make any repayments in full and on time, we may tell credit reference agencies, who will keep a record of any outstanding debt.
If you or other members of your household apply for credit, insurance, or other financial services then we, the Arbuthnot Banking Group, other credit providers and other insurance companies may use search records and any other information provided to credit reference agencies for occasional debt tracing, claims assessment and fraud prevention purposes. The Arbuthnot Banking Group, credit reference agencies and fraud prevention agencies will also use the records for statistical analysis.
An association between joint applicants and/or any individual identified as your financial partner will be created at credit reference agencies, which will link your financial records. You and anyone else with whom you have a financial link understand and agree that each other's information will be taken into account in future applications by either or both of you. This linking will continue until one of you successfully files a “disassociation” with credit reference agencies.
